The Battle Of Thermopylae by Aranthulas The Battle Of Thermopylae by Aranthulas
After a lot of time, i finally finished. Circa 480 B.C.E Leonidas and 300 greeks hold the pass against the might of the over 200,000 strong Persian army led by Xerxes King of Kings. My most favorite battle in the ancient world. Though it was a Persian victory, the Spartans and their allies killed over 20,000 Persians.

Love this! The hue or the warm red colors really make this piece very intense and very masculine. Captures the essence of the adrenaline that every man had when they fought.

Wow, these red and orange colors really gives a battle scent. A few of the helmets look a bit flat and there's not enough blood (For me). Awesome anatomy and shading. The coloring is amazing.

Very cool and exciting. There's a lot going on at the same time, and that's not easy for people to do in depictions of battle.

You nailed it. Congrats.

yeah i went by an educated scholarly guess. But now that i think about it, a million men - what the heck, i can believe that. Makes it more epic

I thought I commented on this... anyway, now seems like a good time. :)

This is a great picture, very emotional, to the extent that it's almost as draining to the viewer as it is to the soldiers. The facial expressions are top notch, too, same with the choice of colour - orange perfectly fits this mid-August scene.

There are some historical errors - the Spartans did not adopt the lamvtha as their shield blazon until later in the 5th century, and before then used mora designs, mostly of gorgonians, leopards, roosters and boars - it depended on rank, as well as symbols of Kastor and Polyduekes, two patron gods of Lakedemon. Also, if the main figure is intended to be Leonidas, it's more likely he'd have a Corinthian helmet with a transverse crest than a Chalkidian with a front-to-back crest... these are, of course, minor nags, and it doesn't affect the visuals of the picture.

My only complaint with the painting is with the shields (aspii) - the black parts look too 3D, as if they're not painted onto the shields, but instead are coatings of licorice or something.

Other than that though, you really did the battle justice, and of course it's one of my favourites. :D

Wow..this is the art of the artist that commented on one of my insignificant character drawings?! The battle of Thermopylae IS one of the greatest battles. One of my favorites is the battle at Marathon. Those men fought, won, marched the distance of today's marathons in (what was it? 20lbs armor? I remember it was light..but still enough to make a man tired after a while), and then were prepared to fight again.
...Anyway, back to your piece. The amazing amounts of detail you put into this and the point of view really make it one of the best battle depictions I've ever seen. You make it feel like we're right in the middle of the battle, amidst the chaos and blood. Amazing.

Two words come to mind when I look at this. Simply crazy. This image does a great job at conveying a strong sense of chaos, and does a great job of taking this battle and putting it right in the viewer's face. What's also good about it is the placement of the view, and the arrangement of characters. You took full advantage of the benefits of drawing, creating a scene that would otherwise be impossible to create by means of photography. The characterization and the expression of the warriors are spot on, professionally executed, and successfully reflect the carnage that surrounds them.

This is one strong, dinstinct piece. It grabs the viewer by the cajones, overwhelms them with the tumultuous environment, and takes them to an incident that is bloody, perilous, and toughest to believe, actually happened. I will agree, some of the greatest artwork ever created in history are frequently influenced by history. Awesome job!:nod:
